Reasons Why some clients find their Therapists Annoying People? Family counselors; MFT; Professional counselors; infact all therapists within psychotherapy and counseling should read this;

Why People are Annoyed by their Therapists?

Some service users were asked this question and we were amazed at how the responses seemed contradictory;

Some replied and stated that their therapist were like strangers –

“I know very little about her”…

Others said that they had felt hounded by phone calls and emails…

According to an article in  New York Times(via Psychcentral) all the above were challenged;

4. Too Much Information: It’s the client’s therapy, not the therapist’s.

Reader Lynn commented:

“I briefly saw a psychiatrist who told me her whole life story – repeatedly. Every comment I made triggered a long story about her life. I stopped going to therapy because it seemed like such a waste of time to spend most of the session listening to her talk about her own experiences”.

5. Being impossible to reach by phone or e-mail. Waiting a week for a return phone call is unacceptable in virtually any profession, including psychotherapy

In our opinion people are complex and variable, what annoys one does not necessarily annoy the other;

In reference to the above I believe disclosure from therapist to client can have enormous normalizing benefits but there is always a line to draw.

As far as contacting patients at home the therapist must question themselves in relation to “rescuing”.

Good clear contracting at the initial session for me is a must.
