The Truth about Universal Facial Expression? Do you find it easy or difficult to assess someones mood by their facial expression? So how would this affect your judgment on a person from a different race or culture?

Recent studies have reported that facial expressions are not universal as we first thought.

The findings which were determined by “Facial Action Coding System” (FACS) were quite revealing;

Participants consisted of 13 Eastern Asian and 13 Caucasian people who examined photographs of white and Chinese faces and then categorized them into six core emotional expressions; Happy; Surprise; Fear; Disgust; Anger and sadness.

It was clearly stated that people from East Asia had the most difficulty identifying expressions of fear and disgust and also separating these from surprise and anger.
