Is There Room for Transference and CounterTransference within a Therapeutic Relationship?

What is Transference and what is CounterTransference?

Transference and counterTransference have become more of a modern concept and terminology.

Transference and counterTransference are primarily unconscious dynamics that can emerge within all kinds of relationships not just therapeutic relationships.

For this post we will refer to Transference and counterTransference therapeutically;

Transference means:  A nerve can be struck when someone says or does something that reminds you of your past. Transferring your emotional past into the present, affecting and even sabotaging your therapy session, this is also indicative of ‘Projection’.
Your therapist will be equipped to facilitate your movement and help to guide you through these past hurts.

“Isn’t this what therapy is all about?”

Transference can be explained by a phenomenon which can affect how client perceives counselor and how client behaves toward counselor.

Counter – Transference means feelings that can be aroused in the counselor by the client. A Therapist will in deed discuss this emotional response in their supervision session and work through these unresolved feelings and projections. It would be hypocritical for therapists not to access therapy themselves if they needed to.

“More about projection in other posts.”

Unraveling The Secrets of Psychosis through Psychoanalysis:

“Psychosis is a symptom of mental illness characterized by a radical change in personality and a distorted or diminished sense of objective reality.

Patients suffering from psychosis are unable to distinguish the real from the unreal. They experience hallucinations and/or delusions that they believe are real, and they typically behave in an inappropriate and confused manner.”
