Relationships can be difficult and we are constantly changing and growing as people, so it makes sense that our relationships need to grow with us. Communication tends to break down and we stop listening and understanding our partners. Marriage therapy will explore how these problems have arisen and what has interfered to make you stop working at your relationship.

Typical issues that can destroy a relationship are: Infidelity, Physical, mental or emotional abuse, finances, parental disagreements, infertility and anger to name but a few.

Expressing your problems in front of a marriage therapist can be quite daunting at first. Some sessions may be in silence as you quietly evaluate your partner’s perceived rights and wrongs. Some sessions may be quarrelsome, arguing to get your point across. All is normal and your

marriage therapist has seen and heard it all before so please do not be embarrassed. Your therapist will act as a mediator and will not side with any of you.

Marriage therapy can be a way to help you as a couple open up and communicate with each other once again. This in turn creates a better understanding of the underlying issues. A marriage therapist can ease the journey, facilitating the painful process that is needed in order to come to terms with the emotional difficulties and the therapist can enable you to develop the confidence that you both need to rebuild your relationship.

Aspects which you can look forward to improving are: Better communication. Self discovery. Awareness of your partner’s needs and your own. Reduced jealousies and Increased confidence to mention only a few.

Marriage therapy is more productive when both parties attend the sessions. Both must feel committed to making the relationship work. If your partner flatly refuses to enter the therapeutic arena then go by yourself. You can still benefit and learn things about your own reactions and behaviors.

You will probably meet with the marriage therapist once a week. Marriage therapy is often short-term and you may only need a few sessions to cope with a crisis, then again, if your relationship has been suffering for quite some time and your issues are ingrained then it could well take several months before the marriage therapist can get to the root cause of your difficulties. So if your relationship is worth fighting for be patient it will not improve over-night.

You may discover that your relationship is irretrievable and make the decision to separate or even divorce. Then again your relationship could start to improve after only a few sessions.
