Is a Hypnotist the same as a hypnotherapist?

The word “hypnosis” (from the Greek hypnos, “sleep”) is an abbreviation of James Braid’s (1843) term “neuro-hypnotism”, meaning “sleep of the nervous system”.Hypnotherapy is often applied in order to modify a subject’s behavior, emotional content, and attitudes, as well as a wide range of conditions including dysfunctional habits, anxiety, stress-related illness, pain management, and personal development.

Hypnotherapy and hypnosis are neither guided relaxation nor guided imagery. Hypnosis is a heightened state of awareness, and hypnotherapy is therapy done in hypnosis. You may use a guided relaxation/imagery to induce hypnosis, but the real work in hypnotherapy is done with various different therapeutic techniques, such as for example, suggestion, parts, regression and future pacing. There are three approaches to inducing hypnosis – shock (immediately), confusion (quick) and boredom (slowest). Guided imagery/relaxation is the boredom approach and where you bore the subject so that their conscious mind switches off and subconscious takes over.
