Did Nurse Deliberately Give Hepatitis C Infection to 35 Patients?

Injections are one of many ways to administer ...
Image via Wikipedia

Safe syringes were used by infected nurse with hep C then replaced and filled with a saline solution to cover her tracks.

A female nurse who worked as a surgery scrub tech at Rose Medical Centre in Denver and Audubon Ambulatory Surgery Centre in Colorado Springs. Admitted to police and prosecutors that she repeatedly stole syringes of fentanyl from operating rooms, then injecting herself with the painkiller, she then refilled the tainted syringes with sterile saline solution and put them back.

Prosecutors are now saying that she infected at least 35 patients with hepatitis C infection.

There was criticism from prosecutors that she was not completely truthful about the history of her drug abuse during her debriefings. She had contracted Hepatitis C from using syringes used by others to inject her daily heroin fix.

A 41-year-old psychotherapist and mother of two who had suspicions that she was infected by the nurse said:

“She maliciously knew what she was doing” -

The nurse told police she didn’t know she was infected with hepatitis C when she stole painkillers meant for patients and replaced the medication with saline in dirty syringes.

If convicted, she faces 34 years in prison but could get life behind bars if prosecutors prove she caused serious bodily injury or death to a patient.

”I suppose the saving grace is that no patients from Audubon have yet tested positive.” – “Maybe this is a chance for us to learn how hospitals could prevent theft of drugs in the future.”

“Let me know if you have any thoughts on this matter.”

Why Make New Resolutions Every Year?

Two New Year's Resolutions postcards
Image via Wikipedia

A New Year’s resolution or a commitment is done to make your new year a better one. If someone makes resolutions to reform a habit, then there are people who want to make changes in their lifestyle. These promises are made on New Year’s Day, the first day of a brand new year. These resolutions are supposed to be either fulfilled or abandoned by the end of that year.

•    Donate to the poor more often
•    Become more environmentally responsible
•    Lose weight
•    Get Fit
•    Become more assertive
•    Become more cost-effective
•    Quit smoking, drinking and other such habits
•    Get a Better Job
•    Eat Right
•    Get out of Debt
•    Save Money
•    Reduce Stress
•    Learn something new

New Year Resolution Statistics;

40 to 45% of American adult make one or more resolutions each year.
Among the top new years resolutions are resolutions about weight loss, exercise, and stopping to smoke. Also popular are resolutions dealing with better money management / debt reduction.

The following shows how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on:
- past the first week: 75%
- past 2 weeks: 71%
- after one month: 64%
- after 6 months: 46%

While a lot of people who make new years resolutions do break them, research shows that making resolutions is useful. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions:
New Year’s resolvers (sample = 159) and comparable nonresolvers interested in changing a problem later (sample = 123) were followed for six months via telephone interviews. Resolvers reported higher rates of success than nonresolvers; at six months, 46% of the resolvers were continuously successful compared to 4% of the nonresolvers.

“Let me know how your resolutions are going…Or indeed if you actually made any?”
